Drawing Casita

Hello! Can we take a moment to obsess about Encanto? It’s a movie that tackles family dynamics, trouble even when everyone has the best of intentions, communication, mental health, and conflict when there is no one big antagonist. Already, a storytelling feat! THEN, it also had a large cast of characters that have imperfect and realistic body proportions whilst being GORGEOUS in their unique ways. It’s a depiction of Colombia that is both faithful and gorgeous and kind, had a soundtrack by Lin Manuel Miranda that mixes traditional with modern, and it made me cry from the entire last fifteen minutes of the film.

Long story short, it’s my new favorite movie (beating even Intouchables, which was my old favorite. Still an excellent French film!). I’d been meaning to do another time-lapse drawing video, ever since my Drawing Houses received some positive attention. So it was honestly meant to be: Drawing Casita. I spent about a week creating this video, which probably seems excessive, but as I finished the drawing of Casita, I found myself drawn to the characters, more than ever. Their designs are so unique and pleasing that I HAD to draw them too, how could I resist?

I’s a miracle I got the time down to half an hour, which is still admittedly long, so feel free to increase the video speed if you want it to fly by even more. There was something inherently pleasant about looking at a character, and tracing their defining characteristics in my own simplistic style.

Take a look at Dolores. I drew her a while ago, attempting to be as faithful to the original as possible. This was the result:

Then, in the making of this video, I drew her again, this time allowing myself more freedom. And look at her now:

I like it better when I let go of perfection and go with what feels right.
