Little Daylight Scene 2

A while ago I posted the first scene of my play, Little Daylight, about an irreverent princess who is taking her fate into her own hands. You can read it here. I think it’s time I share scene two!

Scene 2

Moon phase advances until it’s Waning Crescent. LITTLE DAYLIGHT enters, looking worn. Her hair is loose from the braids and her walk is slow. She lies tiredly on the ground. She traces shapes in the air with her hand, though she must stop to rest often.

MAN 2

I’m tellin’ ya it’s a bad idea!

MAN 2 enters walking backwards, trying to dissuade MAN 1, who is nervously holding a sad-looking flower.

MAN

(a little too loudly) Shut up, Geoffrey. Have you seen her?

LITTLE DAYLIGHT stops her hand and listens.

MAN 2

You’ll risk the neck attaching yer head to yer shoulders for a wee bird’s gaze?

MAN 1

These flowers don’t grow close to the castle. Maybe she hasn’t seen one before.

MAN 2 steps in front of MAN 1 to stop him.

MAN 1

(tenderly) There’s so much out there for her to know. And it’s not just her (tries to replicate Scottish accent) ‘bird’s gaze’ …I heard her telling stories to the stars. She’d named almost every one and I…

MAN 2

She could be my sister and I’d still tell ya to walk away. She’ll be alright but do ya want to end up like her mother, god bless her soul?

MAN 2 takes the flower and sets it on the ground. They exit hurriedly as LITTLE DAYLIGHT struggles to sit up.

LITTLE DAYLIGHT

Wait, wait! What do you… hey! I co- (sighs and more quietly)- mmand you.

Beat.

You must feel silly hiding like that. I’m bored, come and talk to me if you’re so interested in staring.

THE ONE THEY FORGOT emerges from the audience, or plain sight. LITTLE DAYLIGHT doesn’t recognize her.

I don’t suppose you’re in love with me.

THE ONE THEY FORGOT shakes her head then slyly picks up the unnoticed flower.

THE ONE THEY FORGOT

Have you ever seen a fairy?

LITTLE DAYLIGHT laughs.

THE ONE THEY FORGOT

What do you think of them?

LITTLE DAYLIGHT

I don’t know enough to form an opinion. What do you think of fairies?

THE ONE THEY FORGOT

                  What I think doesn’t matter.

LITTLE DAYLIGHT

Why not?

Beat.

THE ONE THEY FORGOT

I don’t know.

Do you want to see a fairy?

LITTLE DAYLIGHT

They never come out of the woods. My father won’t ever invite a fairy to the castle again.

Beat.

THE ONE THEY FORGOT

We could go in the woods. We could catch one.

Now LITTLE DAYLIGHT is interested. She finally turns to look at THE ONE THEY FORGOT to see the fairy holding the flower out to her.

LITTLE DAYLIGHT

How?

THE ONE THEY FORGOT comes closer. Stage goes dark.
